Dr. William "Bill" Loftus, 64, passed away, Monday, March 21, 2016 at his residence in Prestonsburg, KY. He, along with Teresa Apel, his wife of over 42 years, made their home in Prestonsburg for the last 26 years.
He was born on July 11, 1951 in Oak Park, IL to the late John Thomas Loftus and Rita Getty Loftus. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Apel, 1 son, Balin Loftus of Hamburg, Germany, 4 brothers, Robert (Melanie) of Dallas, TX, Joseph (Mary), Peter (Karen) both of Scottsdale AZ and Kevin( Michelle), of Friday Harbor, WA. He is also survived by his stepmother Patricia Loftus of Scottsdale AZ.
Dr. Loftus was a psychology professor at Big Sandy Community and Technical College and received endless awards for his teaching excellence during his tenure. Bill passionately followed the values of servant leadership. He epitomized this practice through service to the students, the college and the community. He was advisor for 20 years to Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society, and during this time, was known for his weekly soup lunches to help combat student hunger. He continued this service of soup to the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry at the St. James Episcopal Church. Bill viewed teaching as a love story and included it as one of his many passions that extended to music, golf, cooking, gardening, and time spent with friends. His legacy has and will continue to impact countless lives over many generations.
