Geneva Irvin Carter, 92 years of age died Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Hospice Care Center in Lexington, KY. She was the widow of James Joseph Carter who died July 15, 1993.
Born March 26, 1922, in Paintsville, KY, she was the daughter of the late William H. Irvin and Maggie Lee Sheffield Irvin.
She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Prestonsburg where she was active in Sunday school and a devoted member of United Methodist Women. She organized the first children's choir known as the Cherub Choir. Geneva also was a Den mother in the Cub Scouts and a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader. First and foremost Geneva was a dedicated homemaker. She was also a licensed funeral director and co-owner of the Carter Funeral Home.
Survivors include a son, James J.Carter II and his wife, Mary of Prestonsburg, KY, Susan C. Roberts of Lexington, KY, 4 grandchildren: Alan C. Roberts of Lexington, KY, Jim Carter III, Susan Raye Spurlock and Becky Carter, all of Prestonsburg; 2 great-grandchildren, Hannah and Catherine Spurlock: 2 step-grandchildren, Aubrey J. Odell and Cynthia A. Branham of Prestonsburg, 3 step great-grandchildren, Jake, Kaitlyn and Hunter Branham of Prestonsburg.
Funeral Services will be 11am Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at First United Methodist Church of Prestonsburg with Rev. Jerri Williams and Dr. Rev. Jim Adams Officiating. Burial will be in the Mayo Cemetery in Prestonsburg. In lieu of flowers the family has suggested contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 256 S. Arnold Ave., Prestonsburg, KY 41653
